Technically speaking, pistols are just one of several varieties of handguns which happen to include revolvers, single-shot, multi-barreled handguns and semi-automatics. Nevertheless, pistols are admittedly the most preferred of all handgun types and as such, it came as no big surprise when the weapons eventually became the most common representation of the typical handgun.

Nowadays, gun aficionados have come to view pistols as highly specialized handgun varieties, coming out in various models and types. These various kinds of pistols may not necessarily have any major differences, but still are considered by some to be significantly different from one another.

Colt pistols are perhaps the earliest of all varieties, although technically, the originals invented by Samuel Colt can be more accurately described as revolvers. This is because the initial models of the pistols as they came out in the 19th century, had revolving chambers, essentially making them revolvers.
Nevertheless, the colt invention was quite revolutionary. More importantly, it inspired other inventors to create other kinds of pistols, including the 1911 pistols. These are semi-automatic handguns known for their single-shot features as originally crafted by John M. Browning, a former worker for Colt's Manufacturing Company.

Known for being the official side arm of the US armed forces, the 1911 pistols were named such because the U.S. armed forces began using them in said year, all they way up to 1985. These are rather historical weapons, for they saw action in four great wars, including the Korean War, Vietnam War and World Wars I and II.

By the middle of the 1980s, however, other kinds of pistols were being introduced, notably the 9mm, and these gradually made the others largely outdated. Eventually, the U.S. armed forces replaced the tired 1911 pistols with the more advanced 9mm's as the officially designated U.S. service pistols.

The 9mm pistols, officially named as the M9, have experienced a surge in popularity in the last few years, causing many American gun lovers to think of them as handguns of more recent vintage. The standard semi-automatic rounds of many M9 pistols may be partly responsible for this, although admittedly, this particular feature has been carried by many M9 pistols since 1902.

Pocket pistols are modern-day weapons quite compact in size and known for being easily concealed. Good examples of pocket pistols currently being offered in the market are those of Smith and Wesson, the SP101 of Rugers, and the revolver pistols created by Charter Arms.

Still, for many gun owners, the 1911 pistols remain a great favorite. These pistols, while no longer produced in extremely large quantities, can still be availed of courtesy of several well-known gun manufacturers, such as Kimber. Kimber has been in the business of manufacturing world-class pistols for decades, with several prominent entities generally considered as loyal patrons of Kimber gun products. These include the LAPD SWAT team and the US Olympic Shooting Team that participate in the rapid fire competition.

Pistols have a rich history, dating back to the 19th century. Whether sought after as collectibles or still put to use today by police and military personnel, pistols continue to have a solid place in society.
